The Harold Palmer Mobile Unit Collection consists of materials documenting the development and use of the Iowa State Teachers College Mobile Industrial Arts Unit. The unit, originally a 44-foot bread truck and trailer, was designed to help instructors teach industrial arts to rural students whose schools could not afford their own equipment. As the District Board of Education Secretary for Black Hawk County, Cedar Falls Township, #6 Eddy School, Harry Barck amassed a collection of rural school records that shed light on the duties of a school board officer. In addition to Mr. Barck's secretarial records, The Harry Barck Collection contains materials from Mrs. Pauline L. Barck (Hekel), a rural school teacher, and the student records of the couple's two children, Frances A. Brunskill (Barck), and Philip H. Barck.

This collection consists primarily of assignments prepared by students in Miss Strayer’s classes; lecture and demonstration material; and typed copies of poetry and dramatic selections probably used as recitations in those classes. The collection also includes newspaper clippings, two promptbooks, and a small amount of personal correspondence. Some material apparently used for classroom recitations was discarded due to its poor physical condition.
