Scope and Contents

This collection consists of three audiocassette tapes. The first, titled “Reminiscing About Minburn of the 1920’s and 1930’s” includes recollections of Smith’s early life in Minburn, Iowa and covers the years 1921-1939. A more detailed description of subjects is available. The second and third tapes focus on Smith’s time at the University of Northern Iowa and include his opinions and stories about professors, coursework, and daily life on campus. Typescripts for both tapes 2 and 3 are available.

Biographical / Historical

Warren Allen Smith was born in Minburn, Iowa, on October 29, 1921. He started coursework at the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) in 1940 before being drafted by the United States Army from 1942-1946. While in the Army, he landed on Omaha Beach in 1944 and was a chief clerk for the Adjunct General’s Office at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force.

Upon returning from the war, he received his bachelor’s degree in English from ISTC in 1948. While at ISTC, Smith was involved in many activities across campus including serving as a research editor for the College Eye and organizing president of the Humanist Club. He was also a member of several clubs, including Phi Mu Alpha, the Foreign Language Club, Students for Democratic Action, and the Writer’s Club. Smith then earned his masters degree from Columbia University before teaching English at the Bentley School (Manhattan), New Cannan High School, and the Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1961, Smith co-founded Variety Recording Studio with Fernando Vargas Zamora.

He also authored a variety of publications include “Who’s Who in Hell,” “Gossip From Across the Pond,” and the “Unforgettable New Canaanites.” Additionally, he was Tony Award nominee Gilbert Price’s agent and also participated in the 1969 Greenwich Village Stonewall Riots. Finally, he was a member of various organizations, among them ACT UP, the Bertrand Russell Society, and the Unitarian Society. He passed away in January 2017.
