Marshall Beard Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains books, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and letters written on both standard and onion skin paper. The contents are mainly personal reference materials relating to Marshall R. Beard’s administrative positions and committee memberships at the Iowa State Teachers College and and the State College of Iowa from the 1940s to the 1960s. These documents offer an in-depth look at the University of Northern Iowa’s changing organizational structure during the mid-20th century. The collection includes enrollment statistics, student and faculty correspondence, financial reports, and several other forms of administrative paperwork. There is also extensive paperwork relating to the Committee on Administrative Reorganization, which oversaw the transition of the State College of Iowa into the University of Northern Iowa.

Biographical / Historical
Marshall R. Beard (b. 1903 in Marion, Iowa) was a member of the Iowa State Teachers College, State College of Iowa, and University of Northern Iowa faculty from 1930 to 1971. After earning his B.A. at Marion College and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Beard arrived at UNI as a history educator in 1930. In 1942, he was appointed Registrar and Admissions Officer, where he made a lasting impact during many administrative changes at the school. Beard spent three decades as Registrar, holding the position concurrently with his time as head of the Faculty Senate and a later position as Director of Technical Services and Planning. He also participated extensively on various committees. As part of these positions, he was involved in several major efforts to reorganize the institution’s administrative structure. He retired from the university in the fall of 1971.
