Scope and Contents Series 1, Administrative Records, is comprised of materials related to the functioning of the Department of Languages and Literatures, from early in its history to the mid-1990s. Scope and Contents The papers were well-organized, so little needed to be done to prepare them for use. The current arrangement closely follows Professor Kalmar's original order. Most of this collection relates to AAUP matters at the state and national levels. But it has direct relevance to the University of Northern Iowa, because of Professor Kalmar's particular interest in collective bargaining. The collection includes journals kept by Professor Merchant's mother, Candace Downs Merchant; Merchant family biographical information; family photographs; addresses by Professor Merchant; and business and legal documentation associated with the administration of the Merchant estate. The journals kept by Candace Downs Merchant during her time with her family in Europe are particularly interesting.

Professor Zucker's papers consist of course outlines and examinations, correspondence relating to the study of Spanish language and culture at home and abroad, and records relating to his service on the UNI Graduate Council. Zucker also donated a large collection of minutes and memos relating to the faculty governance of the Department of Modern Languages and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. This material has been integrated into established record series for those units.

Scope and Contents The Gerald Scott Cawelti Papers, dating from c. 1954 to 2017, are arranged into seven series and encompass Cawelti’s professional career at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) as well as his journalism work. Cawelti’s original folder titles were retained (when possible), with additional information in brackets added by the collection processor.
