Biographical / Historical
Nancy J. Price was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and was raised in Detroit, Michigan, before moving to Cedar Falls. Her father, Malcolm P. Price, was Iowa State Teachers College's (later the University of Northern Iowa) fourth president. After attending the Northern University High School of Price Laboratory, Price earned her bachelor's degree in English and Art from Cornell College in 1946. She received her master's degree from UNI in 1964. Price taught in the UNI English Department from 1964-1968 before becoming an adjunct creative writing professor. She is a poet and novelist and her works include Sleeping with the Enemy, published in 1987 and adapted into a 1991 film starring Julia Roberts. Her work has appeared in the Saturday Review, Atlantic Monthly, and the New York Times. As of 2017, her novels are available in fifteen languages and sold internationally. Price was given an honorary Doctor of Literature degree from UNI in 2018.
