Jerry and JoAnn Kramer Collection

The Jerry and JoAnn Kramer Collection is composed of records dating from 1883-2006 that concern the history of education in Bennington Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa; primarily Bennington Township, #4. Divided into two series, "Series 1: Bennington #4 Renovation Project" and "Series 2: Rural School Records", the collection provides insight into the past and present uses of rural schools.

Abstract The DeSoto Consolidated School possesses a rich history which donor, and former student, Jim Riley is working to preserve. Originally located in Dallas County, Van Meter Township, the DeSoto Consolidated School opened in 1924 and served the children of DeSoto, Iowa, until its closure in 1961. Lorraine Turnipseed Collection

The Lorraine Turnipseed Collection is composed of records dating from 1950-1995. Donated by Lorraine Turnipseed, a former Johnson County teacher, the collection contains teacher contracts, teachers' certificates, a graduation program, newspaper articles, photograph albums, and color slides.

Nancy Brochers Collection

The Nancy Brochers Collection contains Black Hawk County, Iowa rural school student records dating from 1905-1941. A majority of the collection originated in Mt. Vernon Township where the donor's father, George Knapp, attended. However, the collection also contains records from the donor's mother, Muriel Alice Parker, who attended Dunkerton Consolidated School. Nancy Brochers is a sister of Jane Fauser, who also has a collection at CHRIEC (see RSC/HEC/009).

Rough Woods School Collection

This collection, dating from 1924-1929, originated from the #3 Rough Woods schoolhouse located in Hardin County, Pleasant Township. Consisting solely of teaching aids known as the "Instructor Picture Series", the Rough Woods School Collection provides insight into the teaching methods utilized in rural schools. The "Instructor Picture Series" encouraged students to think critically about works of art and develop oral and written communication skills in the process.

S. Elouise Walters Collection

The S. Elouise Walters Collection consists of notes, essays, and lesson plans. These records were compiled and utilized by Ms. Walters in the course of earning her High School Normal Training Certificate from New Hampton High School in Chickasaw County.

Susan Hightshoe Collection

The Susan Hightshoe Collection consists of manuscript and printed teaching materials used by the donor's aunts - Helen Marine, Martha Schemmel, and Lorraine Turnipseed - during their careers in education. The records include plays, dialogues, poems, recitations, school program line-ups, and sheet music. The material dates from 1923-1942, although a majority of the items date from circa 1930s.
