Biographical / Historical
The Hamilton Club at Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC, now the University of Northern Iowa or UNI) was founded Monday, May 18, 1925, with a meeting of over 30 students. EJ McCreary was elected as the first president. The club focused on the art of public speech as well as the advancement of forensics as a study in colleges. They held meetings in the form of banquets, as to best provide students with real life public speech scenarios. The Hamilton Club also supported high school and college debate tournaments. Throughout the years, they held debates and moved from forensics towards a debate and public speaking club that discussed issues facing the United States and students at the time. In The Northern Iowan, the Hamilton Club announced these meetings, as well as updates to their membership, which is also cataloged in the journal in Folder 2.
