Biographical / Historical
The English Club at Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC, now the University of Northern Iowa) was founded in 1910 by the English and Public Speaking Departments when they invited 25 charter members to join. Membership was initially limited in the interest of faculty and students being able to work more closely together, including performing research that could not be completed in a classroom setting. The club was reorganized in 1980, with a membership of about 50-60 students. During this time, the club promoted itself as an environment where students could bond over a shared interest as well as look towards careers and professional plans upon graduation.
As of 2019, the club was still in operation at UNI with the goal of providing a forum for English students and students in English-related areas to discuss literature, encourage writing, provide social activities, and more.
