Biographical / Historical

Alpha Chi Omega, originally, called Chi Alpha Omega, held its first meeting on October 1, 1929, led by Mrs. H.S. Buffum. The sorority became affiliated with Nu Sigma Phi, a local sorority, in 1967 under the leadership of president Laurie Feldman and chapter advisor Mrs. Robert Dalziel. In 1988, it joined with Nu Sigma Phi due to its national charter having been pulled the previous year. Active members then became alumni and pledges were inducted into Nu Sigma Phi.

The Alpha Chi Omega sorority was first founded at the national level in 1885 at De Pauw University. Nu Sigma Phi was then established at the Iowa State Normal School (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1986. In Fall 1918, two Iowa State Teachers College sororities, Nu Omicron Nu and Sigma Phi, merged under a combination of their two names. By 1950, the group shortened its name to Nu Sigma Phi. It reorganized in 1961 but kept the same name. In 1968, the sorority became the Epsilon Iowa chapter of Alpha Chi Omega. The organization functioned under this name until 1987, when the UNI Alpha Omega Chi chapter lost its national charter. The UNISA Senate later granted provisional recognition of Nu Sigma Phi, as a follow up to Alpha Chi Omega's lost charter.
