 Collection
Identifier: 19/135

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one athletic jacket, one print score chart from the 1975 season labeled Panther Paw Chart -- Defense, and one undated football playbook. These items belonged to alumnus Martin “Marty” Stratton, who played football at UNI in the 1974, 1975, and 1976 seasons. The jacket is purple with Stratton’s number, 90, embroidered in yellow on the back. The chart, which is approximately 2 x 2 feet, was handmade by defensive line and linebacker coach Dennis Remmert and lists each player and each game, with handwritten points indicating an internal scorekeeping system for various defensive tactics. A printed photo of the player who scored the most points according to this defensive scorekeeping system is taped on the chart.

The collection also includes is an undated, 93 page football playbook, which contains a variety of information such as various policies for coaching staff and players, equipment policies, meals and training room rules, and the philosophies behind UNI football's offensive and defensive strategies. Additionally, it consists of detailed plays and diagrams for various plays, such as pass routes and blocking. Descriptions and diagrams accompany a majority of the plays.

Biographical / Historical

Marty Stratton grew up in Newton, Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa from 1973 to 1976. He walked on the football team in late 1974. Coach Dennis Remmert gave Stratton the 1975 chart as a gift at the end of the season because Stratton scored the highest points based on Remmert’s internal scorekeeping for defensive tactics.
