Biographical / Historical
Lawrence "Mon" Whitford was an Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) student and later ISTC baseball coach. He was born in July 1897 and started attending ISTC in 1916 before World War I interrupted his education and ultimately graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1924. While at ISTC, Whitford was involved in the T.C. Club and Xanho fraternity. The majority of his campus involvement, however, centered on athletics. He playsed football, baseball, and basketball, winning twelve letters during his collegiate career. He later earned his master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1939.
Before beginning his career at ISTC, Whitford taught at Monticello and Pocahontas High Schools (Iowa). During his time as ISTC's baseball coach (1926 to 1966), the team has a 302-211-4 record and Whitford was twice named the NCAA District Five Coach of the Year in 1963 and 1965, respectively. Along with his baseball coaching duties, Whitford assisted with football and basketball, and served as head football coach from 1930-1932.
Outside of ISTC, Whitford was a professional umpire for Class AAA baseball and was also a Big Ten official for fifteen years. He was inducted into five Halls of Fame, including the American Association of College Baseball Coaches and the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Whitford passed away in 1973.
