Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials related to Huisman's time as AWS President. It contains a 1968-1969 UNI Woman Handbook, given to every woman student; a pamphlet about Huisman's candidacy for IAWS Executive Secretary; a 1969 University Honors Convocation program, in which Huisman was recognized; three items related to AWS installations / initiations for new members, including for a candlelighting ceremony, a Mother's Day Weekend event, and a UNI Women's Day event.

Of particular note is Huisman's AWS President "diary," detailing her activities in that capacity, which included, among other tasks, delivering AWS handbooks and addressing freshman students. The diary also includes information on AWS initiatives and other business matters with which she was involved. A few of the items have notes attached from Huisman, which contain additional information and context about those items.

Biographical / Historical

Laura Watson Huisman is a 1969 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business, with an emphasis in accounting.

While at UNI, she was the Residence Hall Chairman from 1965-1967 and the Residence Hall President from 1967-1968. She was then elected president of the Associated Women Students (AWS) in 1968. As president, she sought to ensure that women knew about what roles they could play within student government. She also ran for the National Executive Secretary position within the Inter-Collegiate Associated Women Students, a role which served as "an important link between IAWS and member schools." Outside of AWS, Huisman was involved in the marching band, concert band, student senate, Phi Beta Lambda, and Sigma Alpha Iota. Huisman was one of the first women at UNI to graduate with a non-teaching accounting degree. She later earned her MBA and CPA designation and built a career in corporate, non-profit, and government accounting before retiring as the Director of Finance and Controller for L-3 Communications.

Huisman was an inductee of the 2018 inaugural class of the Women of UNI Business Hall of Fame.
