Marlys Kay Messingham Class Notes Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 19/66

Scope and Contents

This is a collection of class notes taken by Marlys Kay Messingham as an undergraduate student at the University of Northern Iowa from 1964 through 1968 and then as a graduate student in the 1978 fall semester. The collection is organized chronologically and then class by class.  Class notes are extensive in both length and depth.  Included in some class folders are course outlines, hand-outs, and examinations. This collection offers an excellent look at what was taught in undergraduate history classes for the time period covered.

The collection includes notes on classes taught by master teachers such as John Eiklor, Leland Sage, Thomas Ryan, Basheer Nijim, Erma Plaehn, and others. Of special interest is the student teaching handbook at the end of Box 5.  This book includes Marlys Messingham's extensive notes on her student teaching experience. NOTE from records processor:  The documentation received from the donor of this collection was so comprehensive that I simply allowed it to stand, with only the slightest editing, as a clear statement about the donor herself and her collection (Gerald L. Peterson).

Please also note that the processor chose to put relevant scope and content information in the Biographical / Historical note; please read through that for additional contextual information from the donor.

Biographical / Historical

Lecture Notes from Classes Taken by Marlys Messingham at State College of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa, Fall 1964-Fall 1968; Fall 1978.

My Background, By Marlys Messingham, July 2013

After graduating from East Waterloo High School in June 1964, I started college at then State College of Iowa the fall semester of 1964.  I attended for nine straight semesters and graduated from then University of Northern Iowa at the mid-term commencement in January 1969.  I majored in History Teaching, although I only taught for three and one-half years after graduation.  I have continued to live in Waterloo all my life and retired from the YWCA of Black Hawk County in January 2011, after thirty-four years as their Bus Tour Director.

The Lecture Notebooks

Most of the lecture notes are in brown spiral notebooks.  Unfortunately, in almost all of the notebooks, I have interspersed study notes from my reading with my lecture notes.  Here is how to determine which is which:  the lecture notes have the date of the class preceding them, and sometimes it also says "Class" or "Lecture" by the date.  Before my reading notes, it says "Study."  I wish I had kept the lecture notes completely separate, but it is too late now! I have included a copy of my transcript and have listed below the classes for which I am including a notebook. There are thirty-six classes represented, including thirty-four undergraduate courses taken between 1964 and 1968 and two graduate courses that I took the fall semester of 1978.  After the class listing, I have listed the course instructor.  Some instructors who were just "Mr." when I took the course later became "Dr.", but I have listed them as they were at that time.  In some instances, I did not know their first name.  Some of my more memorable professors were Dr. John Eiklor, Dr. Basheer Nijim, Mr. Thomas Ryan, Dr. Erma Plaehn, Dr. Leland Sage, Cheng Hsi-ling, and Dr. Alvin Sunseri.  If the notebook for the course contains lecture notes only, I have indicated such.  Otherwise, it contains both lecture and study notes. This all seems so long ago, and much of the material is outdated, but I hope something can still be learned from the notebooks.
