Roger L. Burkhart Collection

 Collection
Identifier: 19/20

Scope and Contents

This is a collection of material accumulated by Roger L. Burkhart, Class of 1959, during his days as a student at the Iowa State Teachers College.  Material in this collection includes:

  • course outlines;
  • printed programs and memorabilia related to campus religious life, music and drama presentations, and traditional events;
  • honorary society literature;
  • Social Science Seminar accounts;
  • drama notices and reviews;
  • and a file on student government.
Most of the music, drama, and traditional events programs as well as the memorabilia were removed from this collection and filed into existing series in the University Archives, such as Lecture-Concert Committee files, general performance program files, Commencement program files, and memorabilia collections.  The strongest part of this collection is Mr. Burkhart's account of his participation in the 1958 Social Science Seminar in Europe.  Professors Leland Sage and Howard Jones led this seminar, which was a life-changing event for many young people on the trip.  Mr. Burkhart's account is a detailed, readable, informal look at trip planning, travel arrangements, living conditions, and destinations in England and on the European continent.  Any researcher who wishes understand the Iowa State Teachers College Social Science Seminar must study Mr. Burkhart's thorough account.  Mr. Burkhart also joined the Seminar trip in 1961.
