Scope and Contents
The Nell Woods Black scrapbook is a collection of photographs and papers describing Black’s work as Director of the Westminster Foundation and as chairperson of the Bess Streeter Aldrich Memorial Bookshelf Committee. It includes newspaper articles, photographs, church service programs and sermons dated from approximately 1921 to 1980.

Biographical / Historical
Nell Woods Black was born in McLean County, Illinois and moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1925. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College (today the University of Northern Iowa) with a B.A. in 1926, majoring in English and Mathematics. In 1933, she graduated from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) with an M.A. in English. She spent 40 years in education as a classroom teacher and superintendent. She also served as the Director of Westminster Foundation and chairperson of the Bess Streeter Aldrich Memorial Bookshelf Committee.
