Frances Leone Dunn Barnes Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains materials created and collected by Frances Leone Dunn Barnes, who attended the Iowa State Teachers College, (ISTC, now the University of Northern Iowa or UNI) from 1931 through graduation in 1934. The collection has been arranged into three series. The first series, Galesburg High School, contains materials from her years at Galesburg High School including a scrapbook. The second series, Knox College, contains documents and ephemera from her year spent at Knox College. The third series, Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), is composed of dance invitations from organizations such as Tau Sigma Delta, Alpha Chi Epsilon and Lambda Gamma Nu; programs from university events such as Tutor Ticklers, Orchesis, and English department plays; dance cards and bridge tally cards. The final series, Miscellaneous, includes a Gamma Gabble newsletter, artifacts from her time at ISTC, her obituary, and one photograph. The bulk of the collection reflects Barnes’s social activities.

Physical Access
Some materials in the Galesburg High School Materials folder in Box 1 are water damaged and need to be handled with care. The scrapbook in Box 1 should be used with one of the book cradles found in the S&UA reading room.

Biographical / Historical
Frances Leone Dunn Barnes (1912-1999) graduated from from Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC, now the University of Northern Iowa or UNI) with a bachelor’s degree in Nursery School and Kindergarten Education in 1934. Before her college career, she spent time at Galesburg High School, in Galesburg Illinois, from 1926-1930, completing her high school education. She went on to attend Knox College, in Galesburg Illinois, for one academic year (1930-1931) before transferring ISTC. Upon graduating from ISTC, she taught for two years in Cresco, Iowa until she married Paul Barnes in 1936. After their marriage she assisted her husband in the operation of Elms Cafe in Cresco and later helped Paul when he became a sales representative for men’s clothing. Barnes was very active in her local community, participating in various clubs and organizations.
