Scope and Contents

The Les Hale collection consists solely of materials related to Les and Colleen Hale’s two-act singspiel adaptation and English libretto of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. It was published in 1980. The collection includes correspondence, performance programs, photographs, publicity materials and clippings, and copies of the piano-vocal score.

Biographical / Historical

Leslie (Les) Hale taught at the University of Northern Iowa from 1960 to 1988, served as the music department chair and director of choral activities for the Malcolm Price Laboratory School. He originally was hired as a temporary string instructor before becoming a professor in 1974. During his time at the university, Hale founded the Varsity Men’s Glee Club, the Les Hale Chorale, and the Madrigal Dinners. He was also active in the Cedar Valley music scene, performing in community theater musicals and with the Wartburg Symphony. Hale attended Graceland College, the University of Southern California, Drake University, Indiana University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Hale and his wife, Colleen, wrote an adaptation of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, which was premiered by Northern University High School in 1980. It is a two-act singspiel adaptation and English libretto. The work was subsequently performed by community opera companies and college opera companies.

Hale became an emeritus faculty member in 1988 and passed away in August 2017.

The collection was donated by UNI School of Music professor Michelle Swanson in September 2022.
