Biographical / Historical
Francis "Frank" Dominic Vilmain was born May 4, 1923, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and received his education at Iowa State University, the Iowa State Teachers College, the University of Wyoming, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Vilmain taught physics at Rodman High School in Rodman, Iowa, and West High School in Waterloo, Iowa. He joined the faculty of the University of Northern Iowa Physics Department in 1965, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1988. He became an Associate Professor in 1974 and was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1987. Additionally, Vilmain introduced the first computer to UNI in the late 1960s and UNI's first internet server was named "Frank" in his honor. Outside of UNI, Vilmain was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma, the Knights of Columbus, and the Lions Club. He passed away in March 2005.
