Scope and Contents

The Daryl Smith papers document a portion of Smith’s career at the University of Northern Iowa and date from about 1967 to 2015. The first part of the collection contains minutes, budgets, biology staff notes, and general administrative files from Smith’s tenure as head of the Department of Biology from 1981-1988.

The collection also includes grant proposals and funding requests for the Tallgrass Prairie Center, a handful of conference files, and other planning documents. Also represented are samples from Smith’s publications, including works he co-authored, such as “Natural History of the Cedar and Wapsipinion River Basins on the Iowan Erosion Surface”; “Hardin County Foray 1985”; and “Tropical Seas to Prairies: A Natural History Field Trip in Black Hawk and Bremer Counties, Iowa.” The collection also contains a small amount of professional correspondence.

Biographical / Historical

Daryl D. Smith joined the biology faculty at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in 1967. He was a professor of Biology and Science Education and also served as the head of the Department of Biology from 1981 through 1988. He received his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and his master’s degree from the University of South Dakota.

In addition to his teaching duties, Smith was the Director of the Native Roadside Vegetation Center at UNI and, in 1972, spearheaded a project to reconstruct eight acres of tallgrass prairie on UNI’s campus. He served as the director of the UNI’s Tallgrass Prairie Center and, throughout his career, prioritized prairie restoration, management, and preservation. Smith also taught at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and served on various boards, including the Iowa Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Iowa Preserves Advisory Board, and the Board of Directors of the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, among others.

Smith retired in 2019. The Tallgrass Prairie has since been renamed in his honor.

Professor Smith delivered part of this collection SC&UA in the spring 2011 semester. He donated additional materials in August 2018.
