Scope and Contents

The George D. Glenn Papers range from 1966 to 1995 and have been arranged into three series. The collection consists of prompt books, photographs, slides, and both sound and visual recordings of theater productions with which Glenn was involved at the University of Northern Iowa.

Series 1, Prompt Books, is arranged alphabetically and contains the prompt books for Glenn's productions. Examples include The Alchemist, Hamlet, Noises Off, and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Please see the inventory below for a complete list of included productions.

The second series, Media, consists of photographs, slides, and audio / visual recordings of productions such as The Father, Indians, and King John. The series is arranged alphabetically by production. Please see the inventory below for a complete list of includes productions.

The final series, UNI Theater Department, is comprised of photographs and slides depicting historic theaters, costumes, performances, and performers from the United States and around the world, as well as an index to London theater periodicals compiled by Glenn, which tracks publications dating from 1785-1850.

Biographical / Historical

Professor George David Glenn was a faculty member in the Department of Theatre at the State College of Iowa / University of Northern Iowa, from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. Glenn received his associate's degree in theatre from Shimer College in 1961, his masters degree from Northern Illinois University in 1964, and his Ph.D. in theatre history from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1966. He was also the director of the Iowa Regents London Program from 1991-1992, and publisher and editor of The Shootist, an official bi-monthly magazine of the National Congress of Old West Shootists from 1996 to 2005.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Professor Glenn donated the majority of this material to SC&UA in two installments. The first arrived in 1983 and consisted of prompt books, while the second installment was received when Glenn retired.
