Scope and Contents

This collection consists primarily of materials related to Lyftogt’s teaching duties for the following courses: Humanities, Western Civilization, and American Civilization. Content includes lecture notes; syllabi and course outlines; coursepaks; and quizzes and exams. The papers also include a small sampling of Lyftogt’s publications and ephemeral content (primarily news clippings).

Biographical / Historical

Kenneth Lyftogt was a lecturer at the University of Northern Iowa and taught in the Department of History. He received his bachelor’s degree in History in 1966 and his master’s degree in History in 1989, both from the University of Northern Iowa. His primary research area is the American Civil War. Lyftogt is the author of numerous publications, including Iowa’s Forgotten General: Matthew Mark Trumbull (2005), The Sullivan Family of Waterloo (1988), and Left for Dixie: The Civil War Diary of John Rath (2004).
