Scope and Contents
Materials found in this collection include items from university and student participation in the Midwest Model United Nations; the Iowa High School Model United Nations; the Governor's Youth Symposium on United Nations Day; and the United Nations Association-USA Iowa Chapter.
The types of information found within the Midwest Model United Nations (MMUN) folders include registration information, financial information, conference information, and research materials.
Information from the Iowa High School Model United Nations (IHSMUN) conference varies from year to year. Included within these folders may be: delegate handbooks, resolutions (those not accepted, draft, and final), listing of member countries and the schools they were assigned to, requests for country assignments, listing of secretariat members, research materials, originals and working copies of delegate handbooks, correspondence with high schools and their advisors, housing arrangements for conferences, topic discussions, advisors bulletins, and arrangements for training sessions. The financial records include: requests for monies received from the university and other funding sources, records of monies received from high schools, deposit records, bills, and requisitions for payments and services.
The folders from the Governor's Youth Symposium Day include information on regional meetings, topic information, financial information, publications, and plenary and pre-plenary session staff.
Included in the United Nations Association-USA (UNA-USA) folders are information on the current topics of the United Nations, research material, national conference of Model UNs, and state and local chapter information including some mailing lists of members.

Many items housed in the Rod Library Special Collections & University Archives, including unpublished images and manuscripts, may be protected by copyright, publication rights, trademarks, or model release rights which the library does not own and for which the library cannot grant permission or licensing. Materials currently under copyright are usually still available for research and limited reproduction under Fair Use laws. Biographical / Historical
The Iowa High School Model United Nations (IHSMUN) was organized by the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) under the direction of the International Program Council. Its membership was comprised of college students who had experience with model United Nations at the college level. The IHSMUN's main purpose was to help Iowa high school students understand the work of the United Nations.
UNI faculty advisors for Model United Nations over the various years include: George Poage (founder of IHSMUN), Richard Newell, Timothy O'Connor, Charles Holcombe, and John Baskerville. Other persons associated with the organization over the years include: Mary Helfter, William Lehmkuhl, David Nagle, Patricia Pearson, Cheryl Ross, and Robert Thomas.
