Biographical / Historical
Leland Livingston Sage was born on April 23, 1899, in Magnolia, Arkansas. He earned his B.A. degree in history at Vanderbilt University in 1922 before attending the University of Illinois-Urbana, receiving his M.A. (1928) and Ph.D. (1932) degrees. He then taught for three years at high schools in Camden, Arkansas, and Taylorville, Illinois. From 1928-1930, he taught history at Depauw University, Indiana. It was there he met his wife, Margaret Pearson, who taught music at the university.
Sage began teaching at Iowa State Teachers College (later the University of Northern Iowa) in 1932. He offered various courses in European history but developed a strong field in Iowa's history. Two of his books focused on Iowa history, William Boyd Allison: A Study in Practical Politics and A History of Iowa were well received, with each gaining national recognition in the form of the Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. He retired in 1967 but remained active, frequently offering a history course until 1981.
Sage was also active outside of the university. He and his wife were well-known for their vocal music performances in the community. He also served as President of the Cedar Falls Rotary Club and President of the Cedar Falls Historical Society. From 1977-1981, he served on the Iowa State Historical Board, which included a term as its president. In 1985, he was given an award from Governor Terry Branstad recognizing his services and achievements. Sage passed away on February 16, 1989.
