Scope and Contents

It consists of a variety of materials including reports, correspondence, travel arrangements, handbooks, minutes, questionnaires, news clippings, policies, and more. Many items contain handwritten annotations. The series is arranged topically.

Series 2, UNI-Civic Arts Association, 1973-1991, focuses on Jones' work with association, beginning with its founding. Types of items include membership lists, correspondence, reports, minutes, memos, annual reports presented by Jones, and a near-comprehensive run of association newsletters. The series is arranged topically.

Series 3, Artists Series, contains documents concerning Jones' involvement with the UNI Artists Series (previously the Lecture-Concert Series) and represents the bulk of this collection. It has been arranged into four subseries. The first, Correspondence, 1958-1988, focuses on topics such as Jones' early involvement; details in creating series programming; ticket prices; licensing and copyright issues; and preliminary talks about improving the concert auditorium. Subseries 2, Subject Files, includes annual reports and ledgers. Please see the inventory for the complete list. The third subseries, Performance Files, 1951-2000, focuses exclusively on the Artists Series performances. Included are logistical documents such as correspondence, biographies about the performers, memos, ticket proofs, press books / materials, financial documents / contracts, and brochures for the performances. Many of the performance files also include photographs of the performers. The subseries is arranged chronologically. The final subseries, Posters and Promotional Materials, contains items promoting the various Artists Series performances contained in Series 3, Subseries 3. Please note that the materials are oversized.

Series 4, Speeches, Lectures, and Presentations, consists of talks, lectures, and other speaking engagements given by Jones. The materials cover a variety of subjects, with many containing handwritten annotations. The fifth series, Photographs, include images from the UNI Civic Arts Association. The final series in the collection, Artifacts, contains one item, an owl-shaped ashtray given to Jones by UNI President James Maucker.

Biographical / Historical

Howard Vallance Jones, Jr. was born on April 6, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Newton High School in 1939 and then served in the United States Army during World War II. Jones attended Harvard University where he earned his B.A. magna cum laude (1946); his M.A. (1947); and his Ph.D. (1950). He also studied for one year at the Institute of Historical Research, London University, where he researched the history of England. He married Ellen Margaret Aakvik in 1956.

Jones then served as an assistant professor of history at the University of New Hampshire before his career at Iowa State Teachers College (later the University of Northern Iowa), where he began teaching in 1954. While at ISTC/UNI, Jones was the first elected Chair of the Faculty, first University Commencement Marshal, and a past Chair of the Faculty Senate. In 1973, he was chosen as an Outstanding Educator of America.

Jones was also heavily involved in the arts, both at UNI and more broadly. In 1958, Jones started serving as the hair of the Iowa State Teachers College Lecture-Concert Series Committee (later the UNI Artists Series) and additionally founded the UNI Chamber Music Series in 1967. A few years later, in 1974, Jones began the UNI-Civic Arts Association (which later became the Friends of the Gallagher-Bluedorn) and served as its executive secretary and newsletter author until his retirement.

Additionally, Jones was a member of the Association of College and University Concert Managers (today the Association of Performing Arts Presenters), serving on the board and as national conference president, vice president, and conference chairman. Finally, he was a past president of the Cedar Falls Rotary Club. Jones retired from UNI in 1991 and passed away in May 2013.
