Biographical / Historical
Emily Clara Brown was a history professor at the University of Northern Iowa from 1966-1976, where she also helped start an Indian studies program. She received her bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology from Ohio State University; her masters in education from Arizona State University; and her Ph.D. in history from the University of Arizona in 1967. Brown pursued a journalism career from 1934 to 1942 in Panama and Arizona. During World War II, she served as a public information officer, "covering WAC activities in the Southwest Pacific and China." She also traveled multiple times to India and chaired a few seminars to the country; worked as a Fulbright professor in journalism and mass communication from 1961-1962; and met Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1970. She also spent the summers of 1969 and 1970 researching for her book, Har Dayal, Hindu Revolutionary and Rationalist.
