Scope and Contents
Vicki S. King Grimes was a member of the Public Relations staff at the University of Northern Iowa from 1970 until 2009. Most of her regular work assignments dealt with news and feature story writing, but she was also involved in matters relating to affirmative action, student publications, and the Professional and Scientific classification of university employment. In the course of her work, she accumulated valuable information associated with her writing. In many cases, that information is not duplicated in other university records, nor is it collected and organized quite so conveniently.
The material associated with Mrs. Grimes's writing assignments is valuable to researchers for several reasons. First, it offers a good look at the official University of Northern Iowa position on critical matters, such as enrollment trends, state relations, and controversial personnel situations. Second, the files offer a view of university protocol during special events, such as Arts in April, and special university efforts, such as the capital campaigns. In some cases, when Mrs. Grimes was personally involved in the arrangement and scheduling of special events, the files are particularly rich in content.

Most materials are open for research. Materials related to the confidentiality of personnel, student, medical, and other legally protected records are CLOSED to researchers for 70 years from the date of creation. Consult the archivist with any questions or concerns.

Many items housed in the Rod Library Special Collections & University Archives, including unpublished images and manuscripts, may be protected by copyright, publication rights, trademarks, or model release rights which the library does not own and for which the library cannot grant permission or licensing. Researchers are advised that the disclosure of certain information pertaining to identifiable living individuals represented in this collection without the consent of those individuals may have legal ramifications (e.g., a cause of action under common law for invasion of privacy may arise if facts concerning an individual's private life are published that would be deemed highly offensive to a reasonable person) for which the University of Northern Iowa assumes no responsibility.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
When Mrs. Grimes retired in 2009, she sent the contents of Boxes 1-6 to SC&UA. In 2012, the Public Relations staff sent the contents of Boxes 7-10 to SC&UA.
