Committee on Academic Program Review Files - CLOSED

 Collection
Identifier: 03/00/03

Scope and Contents

The Committee on Academic Program Review was established to provide the administrative framework for conducting periodic reviews of the academic programs of the University of Northern Iowa. The reviews are wide-ranging and thorough surveys of the quality of academic programs.

The files in this record series consist, first, of the committee's administrative documents, including memos, correspondence, directions for writing or revising reviews, and schedules for external reviewers. Second, the files include the much more voluminous self-studies conducted by academic departments of their own academic programs on about a five year rotation.

The self-studies offer assessments of a department's accomplishments, opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses. As such, the assessments include substantial information about the curriculum, student outcomes, public programming, and faculty of the university's academic programs. Material is arranged chronologically. Program reviews may include a committee administrative file, a self-study, and one or more external reviews. In some cases, committee administrative files include material that refers to more than one review.

Biographical / Historical

Professor Herbert Safford, the first chair of the Committee on Academic Program Review, believed that the committee records were valuable historical documents that warranted preservation in the University Archives.
