Biographical / Historical
The Iowa Board of Regents was created in 1909 as the State Board of Education, with the purpose of managing Iowa’s three higher education public institutions. This included the State University of Iowa, the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, and the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). Later, institutions brought under the Board’s oversight were the Iowa School for the Deaf and the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. Its name changed to the Iowa Board of Regents in 1955.
