Scope and Contents

The John Vallentine papers date from 1981 to about 2020 and focus almost exclusively on materials created or used by Vallentine during his tenure in the University of Northern Iowa School of Music.

Included are six binders representing Vallentine’s professional work and documents as, first, a School of Music faculty member and then as its director. The binders, which have been disassembled and put into folders, contain a variety of materials such as annual reports, vitas, research / creative activities, projects, course syllabi, programs, publication, marching band charts, correspondence, and more. These binders date from about 1991 to 2004 collectively.

Some of the folders included handwritten notes providing additional information about the folder’s contents or subject; these notes have been captured at the folder level for each folder that included a note.

Other materials related to his School of Music work include UNI School of Advisory Board documents, such as correspondence, a master plan for Russell Hall (April 2000), and meeting agendas and minutes. There is also information about School of Music alumni, donors, events, and strategic planning.

A small amount of content relates to Vallentine’s time as a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa in the early 1980s and one document related to the COVID-19 pandemic is from his time at the Associate Provost for Faculty at UNI.

Biographical / Historical

John F. Vallentine served in different faculty roles and departments during his tenure at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). He began his career at UNI in 1991 as a professor of music in the UNI School of Music. From 1991 until 1998, he was the director of the UNI Panther Marching Band and the Symphonic Band, and also taught applied clarinet lessons.

In 1998, Vallentine was named the director of the UNI School of Music, serving in that capacity until 2017. Under his leadership, the School of Music gained recognition at the national and international levels and grew to over 300 music majors. The campus' performing arts spaces also saw improvements during his time, with the renovation of the Russell Hall music building and the creation and completion of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC). Vallentine also taught undergraduate and graduate music courses while in the School of Music.

Vallentine was appointed the Associate Provost for Faculty at UNI in 2017. In that role, he worked closely with faculty to provide support, advance university policies and priorities in relation to its faculty, and assisted with the management of the faculty handbook and other faculty personnel matters. Other responsibilities included working with the Iowa Board of Regents, serving on campus committees, advocating for diverse faculty hiring, and more.

Prior to his arrival at UNI in the early 1990s, Vallentine taught at the University of Kentucky, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and in the Waterloo, Illinois public schools. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Southeast Missouri State University; his Masters of Music degree from UNI (1983); and his Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Kentucky in 1991.
