Robert “Bob” Elmore collection

 Collection
Identifier: 19/142

Scope and Contents

The Robert “Bob” Elmore alumni collection dates from 1952 to 1957 and contains materials related to Elmore’s time as a student at the Iowa State Teachers College. The bulk of the materials related to Elmore’s student athletic career. The collection includes copies of “The Prowl” football team program from the seasons Elmore was on the team (1953-1956); the 1955 Spring Sports Dope Book; a copy of “The Coaching of Champions” booklet; and clippings related to Elmore’s collegiate and summer athletics, mainly from the Waterloo Daily Courier and the Waterloo Sunday Courier.

Elmore’s collection also includes correspondence dating from 1953 to 1955. Most of the letters are from head football coach C.L. Starbeck and discuss fee exemptions, football practice, Elmore’s football injuries, and Elmore’s decision to attend ISTC. A handful of the letters are addressed to Elmore’s parents and a few others are from Mon Whitford, ISTC’s baseball coach at the time. There is also one 1952 letter from Dr. H.G. Palmer, head of the ISTC Industrial Arts Department, in which he encouraged Elmore to come study at that department.

Finally, the collection contains ephemeral content from Elmore’s ISTC career including a 1957 Commencement program, a 1957 Commencement exercises invitation, Phi Sigma Epsilon fraternity booklet with information about members, and a Commons building placemat. Also included is a scrapbook with clippings and football programs dating from 1953 to 1954.
