Scope and Contents

Grace Shining's expense book dates from 1905 to 1915 and spans the time when she was first enrolled at the Iowa State Normal School (ISNS) to her early teaching career. She was sixteen at the beginning of the notebook and twenty-five at its end. The bulk of the notebook covers her expenses while enrolled at ISNS, including tuition, clothing, car fare, room and board, and more. Similar expenses are noted for the years immediately following her time at ISNS, specifically while she was teaching. Additionally, Shining listed names and addresses of many people, including some who were also ISNS students.

Biographical / Historical

Grace Shining was a student at the Iowa State Normal School (now the University of Northern Iowa). She enrolled as a sixteen year old during the 1905-1906 academic year. According to her notebook, she was at ISNS from Winter Term 1906 to the 1908-1909 academic year. She was in the County Certificate Course of study.
