Biographical / Historical

This collection starts with a piece called Demands, made by the Afro-American Society on November 6th, 1969. These demands include fair representation on the admissions board, fair financial aid given to African-American students, and a cultural house for African-American students by the second semester of the year. Due to there not being any changes made, especially regarding the cultural house demand, students organised a sit-in at the house of the University president, James Maucker. Thirty-one students total got involved and participated in the sit-in, with seven of them being suspended and punished, including Palmer Byrd, the president of the Afro-American society at the time. This eventually led to the opening of the The Ethnic Minorities Cultural and Educational Center in 1971, fulfilling the wishes of the society presented in 1969.
