Biographical / Historical
The Zeno Society at Iowa State Normal School (ISNS, now the University of Northern Iowa) was founded c. 1906. Its January 1906 constitution outlines rules and expectations for the society. The goal of the group was "the advancement of its members in social and literary culture, in the cultivation of logical thinking, in fluency of expression; and in the use of parliamentary drill." Anyone at ISNS was eligible to join as long as they met the requirements for literary society work. At this point in UNI's history, rhetorical work was required, with many students participating in the school's various literary societies under supervision of the English Department. According to the society's constitution, offers consisted of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, chorister, reporter, marshal, critic, and an executive committee comprised of three members. The Zeno Society held its first meeting in January 1906 where members debated the question, "That the Japanese acted wisely in signing the treaty of Portsmouth."
