Biographical / Historical
Purple Arrow was founded in 1933 and was an honorary organization for freshman and sophomore women that recognized high scholastic achievement. The group strove to encourage scholarship and promoted loyalty to the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). Purple Arrow was the first campus group to make the switch from a local to a national organization; in 1982, the organization joined Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for freshmen. Throughout its history, the group participated in community service, held social events, and sponsored other activities on campus.
