Pi Omega Pi collection
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of calendars of events, pledging/installation scripts, constitution and by-laws (national and local), parliamentary procedures, descriptions of officer roles, registration forms, a convention program (1962) and a summary of discussion groups at the 1974 convention, various letters of correspondence/memos, treasurer’s reports/statements, lists of officers, a membership list (1925-1996), reports of new initiates/membership reports, alumni address lists, alumni permanent records, news releases/articles, a historian’s record journal containing newspaper clippings and event programs, national historian’s reports, ledger books (1926-42, 1949-70, 1975-1996), meeting minutes/secretary’s books (1927-36, 1939-44, 1948-70) and reports (1948-70), the national handbook for Pi Omega Pi, a directory (national, 1923), annual reports, newspaper clippings, and various photographs.
Other contents include a report of judging for the Pi Omega Pi national chapter award (1968), general information about the national chapter award, national awards reports and lists of award recipients, documents pertaining to the annual business teaching recognition and scholarship luncheon, information about Lloyd V. Douglas and Katherine S. Humphrey, memos and information about the Intercollegiate Academics Fund, novelty catalogs/price lists, a petition for a chapter of Pi Omega Pi at Kent State University (1952) and by-laws of the chapter, tabulations of points awarded for historian’s reports, booklets about the history of the organization (national), information about/order forms for fundraising projects, project reports, documents from other chapters of Pi Omega Pi (memos, informational booklets, cards, directories, and convention booklets), programs and memos for the senior banquet/business education recognition night and other events, songs of the organization, packets about initiation service and member-elect service, a decal (sticker) of the crest of the organization, a certificate of achievement, and fliers for various events.
There are various chapter publications in the collection including copies of a newsletter entitled, “The Buzz”/”Business Buzz” (1952-1953, 1955-1956, 1958, 1961-1963), copies of a newsletter entitled, “Who’s Who and What’s What in Business and in Business Education, information about the alumni magazine entitled “Gamma Progress,” issues of “Gamma Progress” from various years between 1929-1968, and issues from the organization’s “Here and There” newsletter (1982-1983, 1985-1996, 2002); there are also two scrapbooks (1925-1970) containing things such as photographs, programs, and information about different years.

Many items housed in the Rod Library Special Collections & University Archives, including unpublished images and manuscripts, may be protected by copyright, publication rights, trademarks, or model release rights which the library does not own and for which the library cannot grant permission or licensing. Materials currently under copyright are usually still available for research and limited reproduction under Fair Use laws. Biographical / Historical
Pi Omega Pi is a national honorary Business Teacher Education Society; the Gamma Chapter of the organization was established at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1925. The group worked to promote scholarship in business education, foster high ethical standards in business and professional life, and to create a fellowship among teachers of business subjects. Throughout its history, the group held award banquets, instructive lectures by faculty, and attended national conventions This organization is no longer active at UNI.
