Biographical / Historical
The Philomathean Society was a men’s literary society on campus from 1878-1931. In 1929, it merged with the Aristoteleans and renamed themselves the Men’s Forum. They were the last men’s literary society on campus. They sought to give the men of the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) experience in speech work and parliamentary procedure. They often held programs with other literary societies on campus. Particularly, the Alphas, a women’s literary society, was one with which they often collaborated.
