Biographical / Historical
Phi Sigma Epsilon was established at the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) in 1931 as the Theta chapter of Phi Sigma Epsilon, a national state teachers' fraternity founded at the Kansas State Teachers College in 1910. Prior to this name, Phi Sigma Epsilon was formerly known as the "Hoboes" (1899) and later Alpha Theta Beta (1924). The group focused on establishing a brotherhood and promoting physical, intellectual, and social development among its members.
