Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials collected by the music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia-Beta Nu. The materials have been organized into four series.  Series one, Administrative Records, consists of materials relating to the internal function of the organization, such as lists of members from various years, handbooks for new pledges, and certificates. The series also contains a file about Roger Maxwell, a well-known jazz composer who graduated from UNI. Series two, Brochures and Ephemera, contains brochures and posters from general fraternity concerts as well as their annual jazz concert, Sinfonia Dimensions in Jazz. Series three, Publications, contains newsletters and other publications from both the father organization and the UNI chapter. Series four, Photographs, contains photos of the members participating in activities and photos of members from 1967, 1974,1980.

Biographical / Historical

Beta Nu is the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a fraternity whose goal is to foster the development of music and brotherhood through music. The fraternity is open to all interested male students. The UNI chapter was established in 1931 and has been active on campus since. The fraternity hosts several music-related events at UNI, most notably the Tallcorn Jazz Festival, which is the longest running jazz festival west of the Mississippi River.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

SC&UA acquired a poster, program, and a ticket from a Sinfonia Dimensions in Jazz concert and photos of members from Jacob Smith, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Historian in 2020. The UNI Museum transferred The Sinfonia issues and the Sinfonia Songs book to SC&UA in July 2023.
