Biographical / Historical
Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society for freshmen founded at the University of Illinois in 1923. A chapter was established c. 1967 at the State College of Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa) as a scholastic honorary for freshman men. In 1982, the group merged with the Purple Arrow student organization, making it the first UNI student group to move from being a campus group to a national group. The group focused on rewarding high scholastic attainment among freshmen and any freshmen with a grade point average of at least 3.5 during their first semester were invited to join the organization during the spring semester.
