Scope and Contents

The Orchesis Dance Company records consist of administrative materials related to the group, performance programs, audiovisual materials, scrapbooks, photographs and more.

Administrative materials include meeting minutes, membership information, tryout information, activities / files from academic years, budgetary / accounting information, invoices, schedules, cue sheets, program / performance planning documents, correspondence, and ticketing information. Many items contain handwritten annotations. Other types of materials include photographs, scrapbooks, and promotional materials.

The collection also contains extensive performance-related materials, such as programs and planning documents, as well as recordings captured on formats including VHS, compact cassette, video and audio open reels, DVDs, and CDs. Access and use of these recordings requires the use of special playback equipment and may require the production of a listening or viewing copy. Please contact Special Collections & University Archives staff with any questions.

Please note that this collection has accumulated in University Archives over the course of many years. As such, there is overlap and similar materials and content throughout the collection.

Some content is recorded on media that requires special playback equipment. SC&UA staff will determine options for access and use on a case by case basis.

Biographical / Historical

Orchesis is a student group that has performed and studied dance at the University of Northern Iowa since the late 1920s.  It is among the oldest continuously existing student organizations on campus.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection of papers, photographs, and audio-visual material came to the University Archives in 2005. Professor Cynthia Herndon brought the contents of Box 9 to the University Archives in the summer of 2012. Mandy Masmar, artistic director and instructor, transferred additional materials to SC&UA in November 2024.
