Biographical / Historical
UNI Proud at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) is a student organization dedicated to providing “an accepting community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual individuals, as well as allies.” Throughout its history, UNI Proud has been awarded the Best Gay-Straight Alliance Award from the Iowa Pride Network.
The organization has had a variety of names throughout its history. The earliest mention of any LGBTQ+ group at UNI was in a February 1972 Northern Iowan article, which ran a short article announcing that a Gay Liberation group was being formed on campus. In 1982, the UNI Gay/Lesbian Organization (UNI-GLO) was founded, with the goal of creating a space for individuals “to share their thoughts and feelings” and to provide education to the campus community. After a short hiatus from about 1988 to 1990, the group restarted with the mission of continuing to provide support as well as creating opportunities for its members to develop positive feelings of self. By the late 1990s, UNI-GLO’s name changed to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Alliance and by 2011, had become UNI Proud.
Events and programs that have been held throughout the years include panel discussions, awareness days, Blue Jeans Day, Pride Week, and Drag-A-Ganza.
