Scope and Contents

Lettow collected a large number of military medals, patches, and insignias, as well as brief files with information about veterans from Iowa who were awarded the Medal of Honor during their service. The files are especially strong on Civil War soldiers, but they also cover the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion, Philippine Insurgence, Battle of Veracruz, World War I, World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He also collected paper currencies from countries all over the world.

Technical Access

Some content is recorded on audiocassettes, VHS tapes, and phonograph records, and requires special playback equipment for use. It may require the production of a listening or viewing copy. SC&UA staff will determine options for use on a case by case basis.

Biographical / Historical

Gary Lettow was born on January 28, 1938, to Emil and Leah Johnson Lettow, in Eldora, Iowa. After graduating from Eldora High School in 1956, Lettow served in Korea in the United States Army. He then received his bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1964 and his master's degree in Music Education from the University of Missouri in 1967. He was a long-time teacher in the Cedar Falls public schools. Before moving to Cedar Falls, Lettow taught at the Yale-Jamaica-Bagley Schools in Bagley, Iowa, and at the Columbia Schools in Columbia, Missouri. He retired from the United States Army Reserves in 1992 and from Cedar Falls schools in 1997. Lettow was a Civil War scholar and worked to identify and mark many veterans' graves. He was also a member of the Cedar Falls Municipal Band, Marengo Civil War Band, UNI Horizons Band, and the Iowa Veterans Band. Lettow married Lucille Ziesman on July 25, 1964, in Hubbard, Iowa. They had one son, Karl. Lettow passed away on December 28, 2014. (Information gathered from the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier and other sources.)
