Biographical / Historical

Betty Jean Furgerson was born on March 10, 1927, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Lee Burton Furgerson and Lily Nina Furgerson. She graduated from East High School in Waterloo before attending Talladega College and the University of Iowa. Furgerson received her bachelor's degree from the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) and her master's degree in social work from the University of Kansas.

Furgerson's career spanned a variety of roles, including working for the Girl Scounts, Head Start, and serving as the director of the Waterloo Human Rights Commmission for nearly twenty years. She served on the Iowa Public Television Broadcast Board from 1980 to 2015, where she also was its president for twenty years. Furgerson was a member of the Iowa Board of Regents, the Iowa Arts Council, and the Lily Furgerson Child Development Center board. She was also a key member of the Waterloo Board of Education and a founding member of KBBG Afro-American Community Broadcasting in Waterloo, along with serving in many groups devoted to diversity and civil and human rights.

Furgerson received many honors throughout her life, including the Leonard Katoski Volunteer Service Award and the David J. Brugger Award. She was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Iowa African American Hall of Fame in 2013. She passed away on August 14, 2018.
