Biographical / Historical

Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was a well-known poet and, along with Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, was a founding father of the 20th century Beat generation. This unpublished poem, "Vroom -- Over White Wisconsin," was written in 1968 by Ginsberg while he was on a flight from Appleton, Wisconsin, to Chicago, Illinois. Ginsberg gave the poem to Cedar Falls Record editor Jim Walde, who was also on the flight. Walde in turn passed it on to Kennie Harris, a University of Northern Iowa student and part-time reporter for the Record. She kept the poem until 2019 before contacting the University of Northern Iowa.
