Black Hawk County Toastmasters Records

 Collection
Identifier: MsC-93

Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials largely organized by year, with the exception of Folder 1 (Box 1). This folder contains miscellaneous Toastmaster records such as the 1949 and 1954 Club Constitution and By-Laws, club letterhead; a copy of The Transmitter; training materials; and the official Toastmasters District 19 publication. The rest of the collection consists of binders arranged by year. Each contain semi-annual reports, meeting minutes, membership information, club officer rosters, correspondence, financial information, a few photographs, and more. An item of note from the 1946-1947 binder is a telegram from Joseph P. Rinnert, then president of Toastmasters International, welcoming 444 as the newest club of Toastmasters International. The 2021 acquisition includes materials related to the previous donation. There are a handful of items from Toastmasters International, mainly brochures with tips for improving public speaking, adding vocal variety into a speech, and table topics. Also included are materials related specifically to Black Hawk 444, including a guide for new members, a 1965 bulletin, and the February 1947 membership charter for the Black Hawk Toastmasters Club.

Biographical / Historical

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has worked to teach public speaking skills and leadership qualities. The Black Hawk County Toastmasters Club 444 traced its roots to the Waterloo Toastmasters Club 101, which was founded in Waterloo in 1935, and chartered by Toastmasters International in December 1937. Club 101 enjoyed a large membership and worked to start other Toastmaster clubs in Iowa. By 1946, Club 101 membership was so large that a split was necessary. Black Hawk County Toastmasters Club 444 was chartered in February 1947.
