Scope and Contents

This collection consists of material assembled by Richard Panek while researching and writing his book on the Waterloo, Iowa, baseball team, the Waterloo Diamonds. This research and writing culminated in the publication of the book, Waterloo Diamonds (St. Martin's Press, New York, 1995). The book is anchored in the Waterloo baseball team's historical, social, political, economic, and personal background. The collection of material includes baseball memorabilia, team owners' meeting minutes, and extensive newsclippings. This material documents Waterloo minor league baseball franchise's struggles in its final years before the franchise owners sold it.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Panek was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the Medill School of Journalism and the Iowa Writers Workshop. His work has appeared in the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and other publications. Panek won a PEN award for his short fiction. In addition to Waterloo Diamonds, Panek published Seeing and Believing: How the Telescope Opened our Eyes and Minds to the Heavens (1998).
