Scope and Contents

The Ted Anderson papers contain materials from Anderson's time serving in the Iowa Senate. The papers consist primarily of two types of materials: Correspondencen and Reports. The reports focus on a wide-range of topical issues. All the materials are business-related and focus on Anderson's legislative career.

Biographical / Historical

Ted James Anderson was born on August 21, 1943, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Russell and Kay Anderson. He lived most of his life in Waterloo, graduating from Columbus High School in 1961. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1964. On December 31, 1964, he married Bonnie Jean Kaiser, with whom he had seven children. Anderson worked at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for twenty years, during which time he was secretary of the United Auto Workers Local 838 and vice president of the Iowa UAW CAP Council. Anderson was an active Black Hawk County Democrat. He was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 1980, serving from 1981 to 1984. While in office, he was a member of the Appropriations Committee and the Labor and Industrial Relations Committee. He was the ranking Democratic member on the latter committee. Following his Senate position, Anderson became a lobbyist. Organizations for which he lobbied include the Animal Rescue League of Iowa Inc.; Prevent Child Abuse Iowa; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSME); Central Iowa Builders and Construction Trade Council; and the Iowa Library Association. Senator Anderson was dedicated to the cause of labor and worked to make the job site safer and to ensure that workers received fair wages. He was known as a mentor and friend to the newly elected members of the legislature. An avid pilot, he flew many candidates and dignitaries around the state. Senator Anderson died at age 57 on November 22, 2000, in Des Moines, Iowa, leaving behind his parents, siblings, wife, children, and eight grandchildren.

Arrangement

The Ted Anderson papers were well organized upon arrival to Special Collections and University Archives and his ordering and labeling were maintained as much as possible. For example, he labeled his correspondence files alphabetically by topic, and did so without regard to chronology. While maintaining his labeling, archives staff organized the letters by year.

Ted Anderson donated these papers to SC&UA c. 1982.
