Biographical / Historical

Flora L. Bailey (died 1974) was the daughter of Charles Bailey, head of the Iowa State Teachers College (ISTC) Department of Art and Manual Arts from 1905-1943. Flora Bailey graduated from ISTC in 1930 before teaching elementary school physical education in New Jersey. She earned her Ph.D. from New York University. Bailey developed an interest in Navajo culture and wrote two pamphlets about the Navajo, including "Navaho Foods and Cooking Methods" (1940) and "Navaho Motor Habits" (1942). She also wrote two novels, Summer at Yellow Singer's and Between the Four Mountains. Bailey additionally authored numerous articles which were published by the American Anthropologist, the University of New Mexico Press, and the Peabody Museum.

Helen Curtis Cole donated the materials contained in the "Memorial to Dr. Flora L. Bailey" acquisition in 1980. Professor Earle Brooks donated the rest of the materials in 1988.
