Bender family postcards
Scope and Contents
The Bender family postcard collection includes a variety of postcards collected or sent by various members of the Bender family. The majority of the collection consists of souvenir postcards, likely from the family’s trip to Europe c. 1910. These postcards feature scenery, buildings, and historical sites from across Europe. Some include handwritten annotations and notes about the images on the postcards.
A smaller set of postcards featured buildings from the Iowa State Normal School (now the University of Northern Iowa). There are also some non-postcards in the collection, including tourist / souvenir guides from cities and sites in Europe; a first class passenger list from the
While a majority of the postcards were not sent or addressed, for those that were, senders include W.H. Bender, Elizabeth Hughes, and Walter Bender and recipients include Roger Bender, Miriam Bender Langworthy, and Eunice Bender.

Biographical / Historical
The Bender family lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and a number of family members were affiliated with the Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). Professor W[ilbur] H. Bender graduated from the school in 1886 and 1890 and later was a member of the education faculty at the college. Family members represented in this collection also include Miriam Bender, Walter Bender, and Roger Bender. Elizabeth Hughes, who wrote a handful of the postcards, was on the faculty of the Iowa State Teachers College alongside W.H. Bender.
