Biographical / Historical

The University of Northern Iowa has had a form of student-run government since the school’s founding as the Iowa State Normal School in 1876. The first effort for a broader student governing body occurred in 1916, with the creation of the Student Council. The Council’s name changed to the Student League Board (SLB) sometime between 1943 and 1945. The SLB included a president of the student body, president of the Women’s League, president of the men’s organization, the men’s and women’s housing units, and a committee chairman.

In 1965, the SLB name changed to the Student Senate. This name lasted until 1970, when its name changed to the UNI Student Association (UNISA). A new constitution was created, which expanded the scope and activities of the governing body. It was modeled after the United States government and its three branches. The group dealt with issues directly affecting students and sought to provide a voice for the student body. Its name changed to the Northern Iowa Student Government in October 1989.
